PATHOLOGY

  • Microbiology Service is a unit in the Department of Pathology that provides diagnostic laboratory services in the areas of bacteriology, virology, mikrologi, serology, immunology and parasitology.
  • The unit carries out tests on clinical samples culture and environmental samples and conduct tests on bacterial and fungal pathogen identification and antibiotic sensitivity testing on isolated bacterial pathogens.
  • This unit also plays an important role in hospital infection control to provide environmental quality control tests such as air sampling tests to ensure a clean environment for patients, especially in the operating room and in the intensive care unit. In addition provide a report on isolated pathogenic organisms which is isolated as well as antibiotic resistance date as a guide to the Medical Officer.
  • Provide consultation and training in microbiology to students and hospital staff when needed.

    • Blood Bank Unit (blood donation) is a unit that is responsible for obtaining, providing safe blood and components to be used by patients.

 

    • Blood donation is obtained by means of in-house walk-in donors or mobile sessions. In-house walk-in donation activities started in this hospital on August 1, 2006, while the mobile activities started in Nov 2006.

    • In-House Walk-In Donor (At Blood Bank Unit)Blood donors will come to the Blood Bank Unit to donate their blood volutarily or after receiving a call from the blood bank.

 

    • MobileBlood Bank Unit will move from one destination to another based on scheduled programmes in collaboration with voluntary bodies. Mobile blood donor is the most popular method currently because people lack the time to come and donate blood at blood bank.

 

    • Counseling for Reactive DonorsBlood donors who are found to be positive for infectious diseases (HIV, VDRL, Hepatitis B & C) after the screening test will be given counseling by the blood bank medical officer before referred to MOPC.

 

    • Treatment for Haemophilia PatientsHaemophilia patients who came to this unit will be given Factor VIII or Factor VIIII treatment.

 

  • Hepatitis B immunization injections for Blood DonorsDonors who donated blood 2 times (within 12 months) are eligible for Hepatitis B vaccination.
  • Unit Kaji Darah merupakan salah satu unit sokongan dalam Jabatan Patologi merangkumi ujian-ujian darah untuk mengesan serta memantau penyakit-penyakit yang berkaitan gambaran sel-sel darah serta nilai-nilai yang diperolehi hasil analisa ujian darah yang dilakukan.
  • Ujian-ujian seperti Prothrombin Time (PT) dan Partial Thromboplastin Time (PTT) merupakan ujian-ujian darah untuk menentukan tahap aktiviti pembekuan darah.
  • Ujian CD4 dan CD8 pula adalah ujian pengesanan aktiviti HIV.
  • Ujian-ujian G6PD dijalankan dalam pengesanan kekurangan enzim G6PD yang menjadi ujian rutin untuk kelahiran baru sebagai pemantauan awal.
  • Hasil-hasil ujian pengiraan jumlah sel-sel darah dan gambaran dalam filem nipis darah dapat menentukan jenis-jenis penyakit darah dalam membantu pendiagnosan penyakit pesakit.
  • Chemical Pathology Unit provides 24 hours services to the wards and clinics in this hospital. Chemical Pathology Services started on February 15, 2006.

  • Special tests such as few tumor markers, hormonal assay, proteins, test for diagnosis of Inborn Error of Metabolism are referred to either Hospital Sultanah Aminah, Hospital Kuala Lumpur or Institute for Medical Research (IMR)

  • Hyspatology services is a supporting unit in the Department of Pathology which provides diagnostic laboratory services through the representation of tissue samples from human organs through specific processes.
  • Hyspatology service is a fixed diagnostic services to help determine the types of diseases through tissue sample.
  • Cytology service, on the other hand is a unit in the Department of Pathology that provides diagnostic services through the representation of cells found in examples such as Pap Smear Cytology and Fine Needle Aspirate Cytology through the processes that have been determined.
  • Cytology units also play an important role in performing screening tests for women, especially for early detections of cervical cancer and breast cancer to get urgent action.
  • The function of this section is to prevent, reduce and control the rate of infection in the hospital.
  • Prevent, reduce and control needle and sharp equipments prick injuries among hospital staff.
  • Provide Hepatitis B Immunization Program and Influenza Immunization for Hospital Sultan Ismail’s employee.

Hematology unit is one of the support units in the Pathology Department that offers routine and special hematological tests to aid in disease diagnosis. Among the tests offered by this unit are:

  • Blood count count (full blood count) and peripheral blood film morphological analysis.
  • G6PD enzyme screening test for the detection of G6PD enzyme deficiency.
  • Routine coagulation tests where this test relates to blood clotting or bleeding problems.
  • Test of bone marrow morphology (Bone Marrow Aspiration and Trephine).

Introduction

Transfusion Medicine Unit, Pathology Department, Sultan Ismail Hospital began operations in 2006, known as the Blood Fund Unit. Blood donation activity was initiated at the Hospital Blood Pressure Unit starting August 1, 2006. The activity was also conducted in mobile areas around Johor Bahru beginning in November 2006. Transfusion Medicine Unit continues to grow with the increase in blood donation and blood distribution to patients. The scope of the services provided is also widespread with the mission to ensure the safety of blood donors and benefit the blood receiver.
